On the eve of Nigeria’s general elections there was a major anxiety among Nigerians when on Google search engine, the Nigerian naira suddenly appreciated over the U.S dollar.
As at 9pm February 22, Google naira to dollar conversion rate read N184 to a dollar, which caused a serious stir across social media platforms.
The last time Nigeria’s currency traded at N184 naira against the dollar was in 2015 and many people were wondering what was responsible for this new figure being displayed on Google on Friday evening.
However, checks by www.e-nigeriang.com revealed that traders who traded with the dollar on Friday transacted their business at the official conversion rate.
On the other hand, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) did not announce any fall in dollar rate against the naira.
Meanwhile popular opinions are that the sudden naira appreciation showing on Google search result is a bug and would be corrected soon.
